Can I use my home address as my registered office?

Short answer: yes, legally you can — provided it meets the "appropriate address" test. The question is whether you should. Your registered office is published on a free, public, permanently searchable register, and once your home address has been on it, removing it later does not remove it from everywhere it has already been copied.

That last point is the one people wish they'd understood at the start.

The legal test your address must pass

Since the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, a registered office must be an appropriate address. Companies House defines that as an address where, in the ordinary course of events:

"a document addressed to the company, and delivered there by hand or by post, would be expected to come to the attention of a person acting on behalf of the company"

and

"the delivery of documents there is capable of being recorded by the obtaining of an acknowledgement of delivery"

Your home passes both tests comfortably. You live there, post reaches you, and delivery can be acknowledged.

PO boxes do not pass. Companies House states: "You're not able to use a Royal Mail PO Box, and equivalent services offered by other parties, as your registered office address."

What happens if your address isn't appropriate

This is a real enforcement power, not a theoretical one. If Companies House decides your registered office is not appropriate, it will change your registered office to a default address held at Companies House.

You then have 28 days to provide an appropriate address, with evidence of proprietary ownership. Miss that and Companies House "could start the process to strike the company off the register."

Which is why an address you don't actually control is a bad idea, and why using a mate's flat you've never lived in is a worse one.

What actually becomes public

Your registered office address appears on your company's public Companies House record. It is:

• free for anyone to search, with no account needed
• indexed by search engines
• copied and republished by dozens of commercial data companies, credit agencies and business directories

Also public: your name as a director, your month and year of birth, your nationality, and your service address (the address for contacting you as an officer).

Not public: your full date of birth, and your usual residential address — that is held by Companies House but not displayed, unless you have used your home as your service address or registered office, in which case it's public because you put it there.

The part that can't be undone

You can change your registered office at any time, and you can apply to suppress your residential address from public view in certain circumstances.

But the register keeps a filing history. Previous addresses remain visible in past filings. And more practically: in the time your home address was published, it will have been scraped and republished by third-party data sites that have no obligation to update when you change it.

So the realistic position is: changing it stops future publication and tidies the primary record. It does not reliably erase what has already spread.

If you are going to use a business address, using it from day one is far cleaner than retrofitting it.

When using your home is genuinely fine

• You already trade openly from home and your address is on your website anyway
• You're a low-profile B2B business with no public-facing customers
• You own your home and expect to stay put
• You genuinely don't mind

There is no shame in it, and a great many perfectly respectable companies do it.

When it's a bad idea

• You rent. Many tenancy agreements restrict running a business from the property, and when you move, your registered office has to move with you — another filing, and your old address stays in the history.
• You have any safety concern. If there's a reason you don't want to be found at home, do not put your home on a public register. This is the one case where the decision isn't a preference.
• You deal with the public. Customers, and occasionally angry ones, can find you.
• You expect to move. Every move is another change and another entry in the history.
• Credibility matters in your sector. A residential address on a bid document reads differently from a business one.

What a registered office service changes — and what it doesn't

A registered office service gives you a business address to use as your registered office and, usually, as your service address too. Your company's public record shows that address instead of your home.

What it does not do: change where you actually live, exempt you from telling Companies House your residential address (they still hold it, just don't publish it), or work if the provider isn't handling mail properly — remember the appropriate address test requires post to actually reach someone acting for the company.

Can I use my accountant's address? Only with their agreement — they must be willing to receive and acknowledge your statutory post.
